Pieces & Prototypes is a composition exercise of no more than 1 minute per track where I try to show the line of creation of my more abstract Hip-Hop side.”
-: Héctor Aguilar :-

These are the words I find when I listen to the audio sent to me by Hector Aguilar, better known as POLAR or Nego Polar on the social media nets.

To Héctor, the label NEKUBI released so far in 2020 an album he had been working on for some time. POLAR is a Hip-Hop project. Very interesting in its proposal and an effective way to surprise with his identity.

A kind of challenge is to develop a track in a limited time as a draft but with a more finished sound and that is assembled as a unit and that defines my sound as a whole.

The world of Hip-Hop is as wide and diverse as the sounds you are willing to listen to. For a long time Low-Fi has gained space in the way of building pieces and as sound, sometimes it is difficult to find an identity, for those of us not used to listen to the genre, we can get a big surprise.

This work was edited in physical and digital form by the greek label NEKUBI that turns out to be an absolute reference in the lovers of the Low-Fi and Abstract genre within the instrumental and experimental Hip-Hop.

This is where the richness of this work lies.  It doesn’t sound like a draft and it’s not a demo to conquer a record label that will release it. It’s a work of listening, gathering material, field recording and processing of the sound material. A great work of surgery with a very sharp scalpel for the construction of the samples and the assembly of each one of them in the mix.

The composition process was based only and exclusively on samples, which I cut and classified in a range of a year or so. The album itself is basically 100% samples. Samples that were taken from different sources, vinyls, films, documentaries and field recordings. That I composed with hardware samples, in this case a Roland SP 555, Roland MS-1, Akai Mpx16 and many Kaoss Pad (2 and 3) and that was only retouched with software at the time of mastering. The idea was to achieve a dirty and dynamic sound.

To be honest, the low-fi that we listen to in this album is an aesthetic decision, thought and meditated, it’s a choice, still, it sounds clear, clean and neat, with a structured idea of the work processes for the editing, there is experimentation in the way of building it, experimenting to deepen the sound of hip-hop.

The truth is that a long time ago I wanted to edit something outside my label, ALPHA TAPES, in the editing tapes. I had the idea of looking for a place where my music would fit perfectly. At that moment I received NEKUBI’s invitation and everything happened in a very fast and professional way. I already had 80% of this work assembled, I was just waiting for a good place to present it and the call from Nick from NEKUBI fell like a ring to the finger. The next thing was to finish shaping it and think of a concept that would define the album.

He taught me how to occupy different composition means to create a whole, to be able to balance the different sources and tools to create a sound assembly that could show in a limited time, what my sound means.
